Accreditation Process Explained

ACCREDITATION PROCESS FOR TEFL COURSES

Accreditation Process

The International TEFL Accreditation Council (ITEFLAC) confers accreditation to TEFL & TESOL Course providers and institutions. The TEFL accreditation process is structured in such a way as not to require on-site visits. This process ensures that accreditation is both affordable and accessible to start-ups, small institutions and providers in all countries – thus creating a level playing field. ITEFLAC will look at the outline and modules of TEFL courses. Our accreditation process consists of a set of key performance indicators (Standards & Evidence) split into eight main areas, including premises, governance, learning, quality assurance, student welfare, awards and qualifications, marketing and recruitment, and systems management. The accreditation process is designed to improve standards and quality and promote professional behaviour in accordance with our Code of Professional Practice.

Accreditation Process

THREE (3) STAGES

STAGE 1: Submission of Application Form

There are two different application forms depending on the type of TEFL courses your institution offers. Once you have submitted your completed application form – you will receive a copy via email. Be sure to keep this email as it has an edit button which will allow you to make any changes requested by ITEFLAC. No supporting documents are to be sent at this stage.

Online TEFL Courses (Only)

If your TEFL Institution only offers online English teaching courses, then complete the application form for online courses (02) below.

In-class, Hybrid & Online TEFL Courses

If your institution offers in-class/hybrid courses or in-class/hybrid courses and online courses, then complete the online application form (01) below.

STAGE 2: Submission of Documents

ITEFLAC will request the submission of accompanying documentation and evidence to support the institution’s application for accreditation (as per checklist). This documentation must be submitted within 60 days of the institution having been awarded provisional accreditation status. Provisional accreditation status is awarded after an application has been awarded and the deposit has been paid.

Provisional Accreditation

Provisional accreditation serves to inform any interested parties that your institution is working towards accreditation.

Library of Document Templates

ITEFLAC has a library of document templates that an institution may refer to. These may be used but not copied verbatim.

STAGE 3: Evaluation & Accreditation

After careful consideration of all supporting documentation and evidence, the Accreditation Council will prepare and submit a report, which will recommend whether or not accreditation should be awarded. If there are any areas where the institute needs to improve, these will be identified in the report.

Points Profile

A TEFL course provider will be granted a Points Profile, which is a measure of its match to the globally accepted standards and best academic practices. A report, as well as recommendations and suggestions on ways to improve a course provider’s or institution’s educational standards, will also be provided.

Accreditation Scope & Fees

Scope

The International TEFL Accreditation Council will only accredit an institution if it is a registered business and the courses have been created.

The scope of accreditation does not extend to assisting in the development of courses. ITEFLAC will look at the outline and modules of a course only. We will only advise on improvements to policies and procedures and you will receive a report.

Fees

An initial non-refundable accreditation fee of US$250 is payable after completion of Stage 1 of the accreditation process. The outstanding accreditation fee of US$500 is payable on the award of full accreditation status.

Initial accreditation is valid for one year and is renewable on an annual basis for a fee of US$750 irrespective of the number of courses a provider or institution offers. An annual accreditation fee of US$250 is payable for each franchise of an accredited institution. Franchises must submit an application form and be listed on the ITEFLAC website.

Payment

All fees payable may be paid online by credit card or debit card. The International TEFL Accreditation Council will send an invoice via email. The email will include a payment link. Accredited members will be notified 30 days prior to the expiry of the annual accreditation.

* Course providers may opt to pay the renewal fee in instalments.
